Agricultural development in Mozambique faces numerous challenges, from climate change and resource management to market access and sustainability. Two key documents, the 2022 PEDSA II MADER Final Report and the 2024 UNECE Report on Enhancing Traceability and Transparency, provide insights into strategies for improving agricultural productivity, market competitiveness, and environmental resilience. These reports emphasize the need for structured agricultural policies, sustainable farming practices, and better supply chain transparency to drive Mozambique’s agrarian transformation.
Key Findings
Mozambique’s Strategic Agricultural Development Plan (PEDSA II) outlines a comprehensive framework for improving agricultural productivity and sustainability by 2030. The plan identifies key challenges such as low productivity, poor infrastructure, climate vulnerability, and weak market access, while proposing solutions including investment in mechanization, irrigation systems, and supply chain integration. Recognizing that 80% of Mozambicans depend on agriculture, the report highlights the importance of sustainable resource management, improved financing, and rural development programs to enhance food security and economic stability.
The UNECE Report on Traceability and Transparency addresses the importance of tracking agricultural products along the supply chain, particularly in the garment and textile sectors, which directly impact Mozambique’s cotton industry. The report presents blockchain technology and digital traceability systems as critical tools for improving market competitiveness and consumer trust. By adopting these tools, Mozambique could gain better access to global markets and ensure compliance with international sustainability standards.
A major focus of both reports is on strengthening governance and regulatory frameworks to facilitate sustainable agricultural practices. PEDSA II calls for public-private partnerships, farmer education, and inclusive financing mechanisms to bridge investment gaps, while the UNECE report highlights the role of international collaborations and policy enforcement in ensuring ethical production practices. Together, these strategies are essential for Mozambique to overcome market disparities and promote sustainable, climate-resilient agriculture.
The combined insights from PEDSA II and UNECE reports underline the urgent need for agricultural modernization and traceability systems in Mozambique. Enhancing production efficiency, supply chain transparency, and governance mechanisms will not only increase economic resilience but also improve food security and sustainability. These initiatives align closely with Mozambique’s development goals and international sustainability standards.
