The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) in India has been at the forefront of sustainable cotton farming, ensuring that cotton production benefits farmers, communities, and the environment. The 2023 Global Impact Report highlights progress across various indicators, demonstrating how Better Cotton is reshaping the cotton industry through improved farming practices, environmental stewardship, and social impact.

Key Findings

1. Sustainable Agricultural Practices and Environmental Benefits

Better Cotton has significantly contributed to reducing water consumption, pesticide use, and soil degradation in cotton farming. By implementing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques, participating farmers have reduced pesticide use by 53%, cutting down harmful chemical exposure and promoting soil health. Water efficiency has also improved, with better irrigation techniques lowering overall water consumption per hectare. This shift supports climate resilience and helps sustain the livelihoods of millions of farmers worldwide.

2. Economic Growth and Livelihood Improvements for Farmers

Farmers engaged in the Better Cotton program have seen higher yields and better market access, leading to increased profitability. The program emphasizes capacity building, training nearly one million farmers in sustainable techniques, which has led to lower production costs and higher income margins. Additionally, smallholder farmers benefit from access to financing, improved traceability, and partnerships with industry stakeholders that facilitate fair pricing and better working conditions.

3. Social Impact: Gender Equality and Decent Work

Better Cotton is committed to gender inclusivity and workers’ rights in the cotton industry. Through targeted training programs, more women are actively participating in decision-making processes, farm management, and sustainable cotton production. The initiative also strengthens labor rights, reducing child labor risks and improving workplace conditions. Programs promoting decent work standards have positively impacted the well-being of farm workers, ensuring safer environments and fair wages.

The 2023 Global Impact Report underscores the transformative role of Better Cotton in driving sustainability, economic prosperity, and social equity in cotton farming. By equipping farmers with knowledge and resources, the initiative is paving the way for a more resilient and responsible cotton industry. Moving forward, Better Cotton aims to expand its reach, strengthen traceability, and further integrate climate action into its sustainability strategy.
